These Football Coaches Have the Most Super Bowl Wins
There are a lot of great NFL head coaches in the history of American football — several of which have taken their teams to Super Bowls.
But not all of them win, let alone win twice or more. Here are the 14 coaches who have won the Super Bowl more than once, creating dynasties out of their teams in the process.
6. Vince Lombardi – 2 Wins (Tie)
NFL head coach career: Green Bay Packers (1959–1967), Washington Redskins (1969)
Super Bowl years won: 1967, 1968
Vince Lombardi was the first coach to not only win a Super Bowl but to also win two Super Bowls in a row. And he likely would have had more if the Super Bowl had been a thing at the beginning of his coaching career with the Packers.
In fact, he led Green Bay to five total NFL Championships (before the NFL and AFL merged in 1966), and he never had a losing season as a head coach. He died from cancer at 57, and the NFL Super Bowl trophy is named in his honor.
6. Tom Landry – 2 Wins (Tie)
NFL head coach career: Dallas Cowboys (1960–1988)
Super Bowl years won: 1972, 1978
Tom Landry was the first-ever head coach of the Dallas Cowboys, and he held the position for an NFL-record 29 years. In fact, it was during his tenure that the team earned its "America's Team" nickname.
Landry invented several of the formations and methods that are still used in modern football, including the 4-3 defense and "flex defense" system.
6. Don Shula – 2 Wins (Tie)
NFL head coach career: Baltimore Colts (1963–1969), Miami Dolphins (1970–1995)
Super Bowl years won: 1973, 1974
Don Shula still holds the record for most NFL regular season wins at 328, and he was the first head coach to appear in six Super Bowls — one with the Colts and five with the Dolphins.
What's more, his first Super Bowl title as head coach with the Dolphins resulted from the only perfect season in the history of the NFL. The team went back and won it the following year, too.
6. Tom Flores – 2 Wins (Tie)
NFL head coach career: Oakland / Los Angeles Raiders (1979–1987), Seattle Seahawks (1992–1994)
Super Bowl years won: 1981, 1984
Tom Flores is the only person on this list to win the Super Bowl as a player, assistant coach and head coach, so these two Super Bowl wins are just for his time as head coach of the Raiders.
Flores had big shoes to fill after taking over the head coaching job from John Madden in 1979. But in his second season, he managed to lead the team to a Super Bowl victory — becoming the first wild card team ever to do so.
6. Bill Parcells – 2 Wins (Tie)
NFL head coach career: New York Giants (1983–1990), New England Patriots (1993–1996), New York Jets (1997–1999), Dallas Cowboys (2003–2006)
Super Bowl years won: 1987, 1991
Bill Parcells' success was spread across four teams, making him the only NFL head coach to lead four different franchises to the playoffs and three to conference championship games.
What's most impressive is Parcells came out of retirement twice to lead teams (the New England Patriots and Dallas Cowboys) to playoff appearances. Of course, his time with the Giants was his most victorious, leading the team to their very first and second Super Bowl wins.
6. Mike Shanahan – 2 Wins (Tie)
NFL head coach career: Los Angeles Raiders (1988–1989), Denver Broncos (1995–2008) Head coach (1995–2008), Washington Redskins (2010–2013)
Super Bowl years won: 1998, 1999
Another coach on this list to win back-to-back Super Bowls, Mike Shanahan was head coach of the Denver Broncos during the John Elway years.
But his experience as an offensive coordinator especially shined in how he coached running backs, turning later-round NFL Draft picks into leading rushers. Case in point: Terrell Davis was a sixth-round draft pick in the 1995 NFL Draft, and he still holds the NFL record for most rushing touchdowns in a single postseason — eight in the 1997 playoffs — which earned him a Super Bowl MVP award in the first of the Broncos' two Super Bowl wins under Shanahan's regime.
6. Jimmy Johnson – 2 Wins (Tie)
NFL head coach career: Dallas Cowboys (1989–1993), Miami Dolphins (1996–1999)
Super Bowl years won: 1993, 1994
Jimmy Johnson is known for becoming the first football coach to win both a college football national championship and a Super Bowl — doing so with the University of Miami and Dallas Cowboys, respectively.
He's also another coach on this list to win back-to-back Super Bowls, winning with the superstar Cowboys team that included Troy Aikman and Emmitt Smith. Of course, he may have won more with this dynasty team had he not left due to growing tensions with Cowboys owner Jerry Jones.
6. George Seifert – 2 Wins (Tie)
NFL head coach career: San Francisco 49ers (1989–1996), Carolina Panthers (1999–2001)
Super Bowl years won: 1990, 1995
George Seifert's first Super Bowl win as a head coach was a game of many firsts. The 49ers beat the Broncos 55-10, winning by the largest margin of victory in Super Bowl history as well as becoming the only team to ever score at least eight touchdowns in the big game.
While his first Super Bowl win with the 49ers was with Joe Montana as quarterback, his second one five years later ushered in the team's Steve Young era.
6. Tom Coughlin – 2 Wins (Tie)
NFL head coach career: Jacksonville Jaguars (1995–2002), New York Giants (2004–2015)
Super Bowl years won: 2008, 2012
Tom Coughlin was the thorn in Bill Belichick's side, as the Giants managed to beat the New England Patriots in Super Bowls twice during the team's Tom Brady era that seemed unstoppable.
Coughlin initially received flack from Giants fans in his first year as coach because he decided to replace quarterback Kurt Warner with the up-and-coming Eli Manning late in the season. While it took a few years for Manning to find his groove, by the 2007 season, he was ready to compete against Tom Brady and win in the NFL's biggest game.
3. Bill Walsh – 3 Wins (Tie)
NFL head coach career: San Francisco 49ers (1979–1988)
Super Bowl years won: 1982, 1985, 1989
We already talked about George Seifert's Super Bowl wins with the 49ers, but their success initially started with Bill Walsh. After all, he's the one that selected quarterback Joe Montana in the third round of the 1979 NFL Draft.
By 1981, the team had a 13–3 regular season and won the NFC title game in a momentous touchdown pass by Joe Montana to Dwight Clark, still known today as simply "The Catch." That same season, the 49ers went on to win their first of many Super Bowls.
3. Joe Gibbs – 3 Wins (Tie)
NFL head coach career: Washington Redskins (1981–1992, 2004–2007)
Super Bowl years won: 1983, 1988, 1992
Joe Gibbs had two stints as the head coach of the Washington Redskins, but it was his first run that earned him the most Super Bowl wins.
It's important to note that the team's 1988 win was with Doug Williams as head quarterback, as the two were an important part of football history. When Gibbs was offensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1978, he made the controversial decision to select Williams as the first African American to be drafted in the first round as quarterback. Fast forward a decade, and the two were holding the Lombardi Trophy together.
3. Andy Reid – 3 Wins (Tie)
NFL head coach career: Philadelphia Eagles (1999–2012), Kansas City Chiefs (2013–present)
Super Bowl years won: 2020, 2023, 2024
Andy Reid is the only coach on this list currently coaching, so he may still have a few Super Bowl wins ahead of him. Reid has an impressive history of building struggling franchises into the NFL's best. He did it first with the Philadelphia Eagles, winning five NFC championships but never a Lombardi Trophy.
Now, with the Kansas City Chiefs, he already has three Super Bowl wins, and if quarterback Patrick Mahomes has anything to say about it, the Chiefs' future success continues to look bright.
2. Chuck Knoll – 4 Wins
NFL head coach career: Pittsburgh Steelers (1969–1991)
Super Bowl years won: 1975, 1976, 1979, 1980
Chuck Knoll has one of the longest tenures head coaching with one NFL team in the league's history.
His time with the Steelers was some of the franchise's best, taking the team to back-to-back Super Bowls twice and becoming the coach with the most Super Bowl wins ever without a Super Bowl loss.
1. Bill Belichick – 6 Wins
NFL head coach career: Cleveland Browns (1991–1995), New England Patriots (2000–2023)
Super Bowl years won: 2002, 2004, 2005, 2015, 2017, 2019
Considered to be perhaps the greatest coach of all time, Bill Belichick holds the record for most Super Bowl wins as a head coach, but he also earned two wins as the defensive coordinator of the New York Giants, giving him a total of eight victories as coach and coordinator.
Part of the Bill Parcells coaching tree, Belichick worked with Parcells for the New York Giants, became head coach of the Cleveland Browns in 1991 and then rejoined Parcells as assistant head coach and defensive backs for the Patriots in 1996.
Of course, Belichick played a huge role in the New England Patriots' football dynasty from 2001 to 2019, working with Tom Brady to secure multiple victories.
