Most High School Girls Soccer State Championships
When it comes to girls soccer, no one does it as well as the United States, where we have produced the very best players in the world with stunning efficiency since the 1980s.
High school soccer in the U.S. is hard to peg down because it's played in different seasons across the country. In some states, it's played in the fall, while in others, it's in the spring. What's not up for debate is how the elite high school teams across the country build dynasties — by winning state championships.
Here's a look at the high schools in the U.S. with the most state championships in girls soccer through the spring of 2023.
16. River Hill High School — 13 State Championships (Tie)
Location: Clarksville, Maryland
State championships: 1997, 1999-2001, 2006-08, 2012-14, 2016-18
Notable coaches: Brian Song, Cynthia Odell, Joan Kelso Smedley
Notable players: Sheridan Street, Alex Hamer, Caroline Duffy, Victoria Tran, Callie Allen
Bottom line: Brian Song's tenure as River Hill head coach has seen some of the more thrilling finishes in state championship history. While Song has won nine state championships with River Hill, three of those times, the high school played in and won a state championship game in either overtime or with penalty kicks.
Former midfielder Sheridan Street, who went on to play for Syracuse, led River Hill to back-to-back state titles in 2013 and 2014 and was named The Baltimore Sun's Girls Soccer Player of the Decade in 2021.
16. St. John's Country Day High School — 13 State Championships (Tie)
Location: Orange Park, Florida
State championships: 2005, 2007, 2009, 2012-22
Notable coaches: Mike Pickett
Notable players: Kamy Loustau, Abbey Newton, Chelsea Burns, Carson Pickett
Bottom line: St. John's Country Day tied the national record with 11 consecutive state championships from 2012 to 2022 before missing out on a 12th straight title in 2023 with a 2-1 loss to Lakeland Christian in the Class 2A state championship game.
What's amazing is St. John's Country Day didn't win its first state championship until 2005 and has seen four of its players named Florida Gatorade Player of the Year since 2012. That includes U.S. Women's National Team defender Carson Pickett, who also led Florida State to the 2015 NCAA national championship — a run that saw the Seminoles not allow a single goal in the postseason.
16. Xavier College Prep— 13 State Championships (Tie)
Location: Phoenix, Arizona
State championships: 1993-95, 2000, 2002, 2009, 2010, 2013, 2017, 2018, 2021-23
Notable coaches: Barbara Chura, Christy Coury, Anne Mary Highland, Mary Schinzel
Notable players: Kyla Ferry, Jessica Petznick, Michaela Dooley
Bottom line: The real template for making it on this list is consistency — Xavier Prep doesn't have a gaudy streak of state championships but has won at least three state championships in four consecutive decades dating back to the school's first title in 1993.
Xavier Prep, an all-girls school, has also had two unbeaten state championship teams in 1994 and 2023.
16. Cold Spring Harbor High School — 13 State Championships (Tie)
Location: Cold Spring Harbor, New York
State championships: 1985-87, 1989-93, 1996-2000
Notable coaches: Steve Cacioppo
Notable players: Liz Fetterolf, Kira Licata, Marci Block
Bottom line: One of two high schools from New York to make the list, Cold Spring Harbor dominated girls soccer in the state for almost two whole decades — all 13 of its state championships were won from 1985 to 2000.
Cold Spring Harbor has reeled off five consecutive state championships twice, first from 1989 to 1993 and then again from 1996 to 2000. The school has had the same head coach for all 13 state titles with Steve Cacioppo.
16. Riverside High School — 13 State Championships (Tie)
Location: Greer, South Carolina
State championships: 1991-97, 1999, 2001, 2004, 2006, 2009, 2010
Notable coaches: Terry Archenhold
Notable players: Sarah Jacobs, Sarah Delap
Bottom line: Riverside dominated two decades of high school girls soccer in South Carolina, kicking off its dynasty by winning seven consecutive state titles from 1991 to 1997 and all 13 of its titles by 2010.
Riverside goaltender Sarah Delap still holds the state single-season record with 21 shutouts as a senior in 2006 and is second with 67 career shutouts. Former coach Terry Archenhold retired twice — in 2017 and 2021 — and is South Carolina's career coaching wins leader in girls soccer with a record of 314-47-3. That included a state-record, 83-game winning streak from 1991 to 1993.
14. La Salle Academy — 15 State Championships (Tie)
Location: Providence, Rhode Island
State championships: 2001-05, 2008-11, 2013, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2020
Notable coaches: Lindsay Longval
Notable players: Molly Parkhurst, Alyssa Long, Caitlin Hostetler, Allison Kelley, McKenzie Meehan, Olivia Freitas, Catherine Clements
Bottom line: La Salle Academy has dominated girls soccer in Rhode Island over the last 20-plus years — they haven't gone more than two seasons without winning a state championship since winning their first title in 2001.
La Salle has also been home to the Rhode Island Gatorade Player of the Year 10 times in the last 20 years, including three two-time winners with Allison Kelley, McKenzie Meehan and Olivia Freitas, who had 17 goals and 10 assists as a senior in 2018 as La Salle went 18-0 and won a second consecutive state title.
14. Ramapo High School — 15 State Championships (Tie)
Location: Franklin Lakes, New Jersey
State championships: 1982, 1983, 1986, 1987, 1990, 1997-99, 2006, 2008-15
Notable coaches: Paul Heenehan
Notable players: Carolina Chagares, Lizanne Coyne, Beth Schimenti
Bottom line: Paul Heenehan was Ramapo's head coach from 1978 to 2016 — and all 15 state championships occurred on his watch, including eight consecutive titles from 2008 to 2015. Heenehan's 724 career wins are the most in New Jersey history. Ramapo also won a national championship in 1996.
Former Ramapo star Carolina Chagares won the New Jersey Gatorade Player of the Year Award twice and did so in a unique fashion. Chagares won it for the first time as a sophomore in 2012 and for the second time as a senior in 2014 when she scored 15 game-winning goals.
9. St. Thomas Aquinas High School (Florida) — 15 State Championships (Tie)
Location: Fort Lauderdale, Florida
State championships: 1990, 1993-99, 2004, 2005, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015, 2017
Notable coaches: Carlos Giron
Notable players: Bella Dorosy, Caitlin Miskel, Alexis McKenzie, India Trotter
Bottom line: Former St. Thomas Aquinas head coach Carlos Giron is the winningest high school girls soccer coach in U.S. history with a career record of 770-72-24 (90.3 winning percentage). Giron coached St. Thomas Aquinas from 1984 to 2016, winning 14 of the school's 15 state championships. Giron's teams also set a national record with 119 straight wins from 1994 to 1998. These teams also set national records for single-season goals (238), single-season shutouts (29) and consecutive shutouts (26), all set in the 1995-96 school year.
St. Thomas Aquinas has had three players named Florida Gatorade Player of the Year and two who won it twice — Bella Dorosy and Caitlin Miskel.
9. The Derryfield School — 15 State Championships (Tie)
Location: Manchester, New Hampshire
State championships: 1989, 1991, 1996-2001, 2005, 2008-19, 2014, 2015
Notable coaches: Bob Cole, Bill Nardino, Jack Sanford, Chris Ralphs, Matthew Gresco
Notable players: Gabi Brummett, Stacey Stamer, Karin Loscocco, Christine Culver
Bottom line: Former Derryfield head coach Bob Cole guided his team to the first nine state championships in school history, including six consecutive titles from 1996 to 2001. Several former Derryfield players still have their names in the New Hampshire record books. Goaltender Kariin Loscocco played from 1987 to 1990 and is third in state history with 49 career shutouts. Two-time New Hampshire Gatorade Player of the Year Gabi Brummett, who played college soccer for Duke, is third in career points with 136 over just two seasons in 2013 and 2014.
Derryfield still holds the record for single-season goals with 102 in 2008 and has three of the top 10 seasons in state history for single-season goals with 90 in 2000 and 89 in 1999.
9. Catlin Gabel School — 15 State Championships (Tie)
Location: Portland, Oregon
State championships: 1992, 1994-2004, 2010, 2019, 2021
Notable coaches: Chris Dorough
Notable players: Linda Peterson, Grace Mueller
Bottom line: Catlin Gabel won its first state title in 1992, then reeled off 11 consecutive state championships from 1994 to 2004, tied for the longest streak in U.S. history.
Despite all its accolades, Gabel has never had one of its players named Oregon Gatorade Player of the Year.
9. Morris Catholic High School — 15 State Championships (Tie)
Location: Denville, New Jersey
State championships: 1988-95, 1997, 1999, 2001, 2003, 2012. 2013, 2016
Notable coaches: Steve Racine
Notable players: Heather Deerin, Bailey Chant
Bottom line: In case you didn't know, we'll tell you now — high school girls soccer in New Jersey is as good as anywhere in the country.
Morris Catholic won its first state championship in 1988, kicking off a streak of eight consecutive titles under former head coach Steven Racine, who coached Morris Catholic from 1982 to 2011. Racine won 12 state championships in that time and finished his career with 593 career wins. Morris Catholic's Heather Deerin still holds the national single-season record for assists with 58 in 1997.
9. Northfield High School — 15 State Championships (Tie)
Location: Northfield, Vermont
State championships: 1981, 1984, 1986, 1988, 1989, 1993, 1995-2001, 2003-05
Notable coaches: Mike Gonneville
Notable players: Teri Dodge
Bottom line: Northfield dominated girls soccer in Vermont from the mid-1990s to the early 2000s, winning seven consecutive state championships from 1995 to 2001. It was a stretch that included a 74-game winning streak from 1996 to 1999. Mike Gonneville was the head coach who started Northfield's program in the late 1970s and was the coach for 14 of the 15 state championship teams before he retired following the 2004 season.
Unfortunately, Vermont doesn't have a lot of readily available information on the history of girls soccer in the state — a shame because the state placed three teams on this list. What we do know is that in 2017 Northfield combined with Williamstown to create a co-op soccer team between the two schools.
4. Bishop Kelley High School — 16 State Championships (Tie)
Location: Tulsa, Oklahoma
State championships: 1999-2008, 2010-13, 2017, 2021
Notable coaches: Troy Tokarchik
Notable players: Katie Bykowski, Kaela Little, Madison Tokarchik
Bottom line: Bishop Kelley won 15 of its 16 state championships under former head coach Troy Tokarchik, who left after 21 seasons to become the coach at Tulsa Holland Hall.
Tokarchik saw three of his players earn Oklahoma Gatorade Player of the Year honors, including two goaltenders with Katie Bykowski in 2008 and Kaela Little in 2012 after she led Bishop Kelley to a 17-0 record and the Class 6A state championships, including 12 shutouts.
The only position player to earn Oklahoma Gatorade POY from Bishop Kelley was Tokarchik's daughter, midfielder Madison Tokarchik, who won the award in 2020 and was also a three-time All-Tulsa World selection.

Notable players: Tatum Shappy
Bottom line: Milton High won eight state titles in the decade from 1984 to 1994, including five consecutive championships from 1990 to 1994.
Since the Vermont Principals Association, which oversees high school sports in the state, doesn't keep a comprehensive list of state records for girls soccer, we are unable to report any stats on individual players.
4. Jesuit High School — 16 State Championships (Tie)
Location: Portland, Oregon
State championships: 1993-99, 2001, 2002, 2009, 2015, 2017-19, 2022

In more recent years, 2019 Oregon Gatorade Player of the Year and current University of Oregon star Callan Harrington set state records for single-season and career goals scored — her 133 career goals broke U.S. Women's National Team standout and former Hillsboro High star Tiffeny Mibrett's record by one goal.

Notable players: Jessica Wolf, Amy Warner, Danielle Schoen, Alexis Ball, Courtney Riley, Cassie Boren, Samantha Johnson, Jordyn Lacy

3. South Side High School — 17 State Championships
Location: Rockville Centre, New York
State championships: 1987, 1990-94, 2006-08, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2015-18
Notable coaches: Bob Bigelow
Notable players: Crystal Dunn, Keri Cavallo, Alaina Beyar, Elizabeth Roberti
Bottom line: One player stands above the rest when it comes to the South Side High girls soccer dynasty — former Parade All-American and 2009 New York Gatorade Player of the Year Crystal Dunn.
Dunn led South Side to three state championships in three seasons and only missed her junior season to compete in the 2008 FIFA U17 Women's World Cup. Dunn led the University of North Carolina to an NCAA Championship in 2012 when she was also named ACC Player of the Year and National College Player of the Year. As a pro, Dunn was named NWSL Most Valuable Player in 2015 with the Washington Spirit.
Dunn has been a mainstay for the U.S. Women's National Team since 2013, where she's earned 130 caps and scored 24 goals and was part of the World Cup-winning team in 2019.

In more recent years, midfielder/forward Sydney Watts led St. Thomas Aquinas to back-to-back state titles as a sophomore in 2021 and as a junior in 2022 when her team went 17-0-2 and she was named Kansas Gatorade Player of the Year. Watts, who will play college soccer for Vanderbilt, is also a member of the U17 U.S. Women's National Team.
St. Thomas Aquinas head coach Craig Ewing has been the boys and girls soccer head coach since the school opened in 1988 and has a combined 909 wins between the two programs.
1. Champlain Valley Union High School — 20 State Championships
Location: Hinesburg, Vermont
State championships: 1981, 1984, 1988, 1995-98, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2011-15, 2017-19, 2022

Bottom line: Champlain Valley Union (CVU) sits at the top of the mountain when it comes to girls soccer state championships for the entire U.S., winning multiple titles in each of the last five decades dating back to the school's first title in 1981.
Even for all that success, CVU has never been more dominant than in recent years, with seven titles in the last decade, including three consecutive unbeaten seasons from 2017 to 2019 and coming just won game short of making it four except for a loss to South Burlington in the 2020 state championship game.
